The Luso/Hispanophone Caucus of the African Literature Association (LHCALA), a joint caucus of researchers, writers and teachers of African and African Diaspora literatures in Spanish and Portuguese, was formed on April 15, 2011 at the 37th Annual African Literature Association Conference held in Athens, Ohio. The creation of the Caucus at the very first meeting that brought together both Hispanists and Lusophone Studies specialists, marked the significant step of recognizing, within the African Literature Association, the contributions to African and African Diaspora literatures and cultures from Equatorial Guinea, Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe.
The objectives of the Luso/Hispanophone Caucus of the African Literature Association (LHCALA) include:
- The establishment of a network of researchers, writers and teachers who work on African and African Diaspora literatures and cultures in Spanish or Portuguese
- The provision of a forum for the dissemination of research in African and the African Diaspora literatures and cultures from Spanish and Portuguese-speaking regions
- The promotion of cross-cultural dialogue between African and African Diaspora literatures and cultures in Spanish or Portuguese, and other literatures and cultures that have been influenced by, or that have influenced, the latter
