The University of Oregon’s English Department invites applications for a tenure-track position of open rank in literatures and media of Africa and the African diaspora, to begin in fall 2017. We seek candidates specializing in the cultural productions of one or more locations in Africa and/or Africa and the African diaspora in any period. A commitment to excellence in scholarship and teaching as well as a demonstrated commitment to engaging with a diverse student body in research, teaching and service are required. Competitive applicants will be capable of outstanding research and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. We are especially interested in scholars who will enhance the department’s existing strengths in interdisciplinary literary studies and multimedia scholarship on race, ethnicity, empire and imperialism, and (post)colonial and (trans)national cultural formations.We are a diverse and growing department with strengths in British, American, and Anglophone literature and media, as well as in environmental humanities, queer and gender studies, rhetoric, disability studies, comic studies, and folklore. The department plays a key role in a robust major in Cinema Studies, and in two new interdisciplinary graduate certificates; New Media and Culture, and Politics, Identity and Culture. We particularly welcome applications from scholars who are from populations historically underrepresented in the academy, and/or who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, especially those with a demonstrated commitment to engaging with African American students in research, teaching and service. We also encourage applications from scholars who have ties with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as well as scholars with extensive research and service connections in African American communities.
In order to enhance the prospects for rich intellectual collaboration on the literatures, media, and cultures of Africa and the African diaspora at the University of Oregon, the English department is participating in a cluster hire in African American studies that includes African American History (Department of History), Black Feminist Theory (Department of Women’s and Gender Studies), and Literatures and Media of Africa and the African Diaspora (Department of English). These three open-rank searches for tenure-track faculty will bring at least three scholars to a campus expanding its existing expertise in African American Studies in the contexts of Africa and the African diaspora in twenty-five departments and across six schools and colleges. We seek to create a cohort of scholars with complementary strengths and shared interests who will help us work toward establishing a comprehensive curriculum in Black Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, and whose scholarship and teaching will enhance the study of race and ethnicity at UO and beyond.
Minimum Requirements: Ph.D. in English or related field in hand by time of appointment.
Salary is competitive.
