Garissa University Attack

Dear ALA Members and Friends,

Following the attacks on Garissa University College in Garissa, Kenya, on April 2nd 2015, the Executive Council of the African Literature Association has issued the following statement on behalf of our Association.

The African Literature Association (ALA) strongly condemns the barbaric attacks by the Al-Shabab militant group on students at Garissa University College in Garissa, Kenya. We deplore the wanton loss of life and the violent disregard for the rights to education and intellectual advancement. We express our heartfelt condolences to Garissa University staff and students, the families of the dead and injured, and the Kenyan people. As scholars and as educators, we demand that universities and other educational institutions remain safe spaces for learning and exchange of ideas, irrespective of political, sectarian, and religious affiliation.
