Job Description:

The Department of Africana Studies at Binghamton University, State University of New York, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in African Literature and Culture. We seek a candidate with expertise in African literature and culture ranging from oral to written literature spanning pre-colonial, colonial, post-colonial periods, while also examining neocolonialism (and/or globalization), irrespective of the region. The potential hire should demonstrate expertise in literature and culture, and have a critical approach to the expansive and rapidly growing literature of the African world. 

The successful candidate may teach such courses as Introduction to African Literature, African Oral Traditions and Literature, The African Novel. The candidate may teach other courses that ground the foundations of knowledge production and epistemology of the African continent as expressed by her peoples in literature, while also drawing connections to contemporary African sociopolitical life and experiences of people of African descent, in the continent and diaspora. The successful candidate will assist in mentoring our Honors students, participate in departmental activities, and engage in collaborations beyond the department as appropriate.

Africana Studies at Binghamton University is a multidisciplinary field that focuses on African peoples and cultures and their descendants globally. Established in 1969, we are one of the oldest Black Studies departments in the United States. The new position will expand our course offerings to our students in the Cultural Studies track, as well as in the upcoming the Global Public Health program,
