Assoc. Professor – Translation and Interpreting Studies

Associate Professor - Translation and Interpreting Studies (School of Literature, Languages & Media Studies)

Wits University

Closing Date: 26th February 2021

The Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies is seeking to make an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor to start in 2021. The department offers predominantly postgraduate courses at Honours, PG Diploma and MA level (coursework and research report) in both translation and interpreting. It also offers MA and PhD degrees by research.

Requirements: Candidates should hold a PhD in Translation Studies or a related field and have extensive experience in teaching, supervision and administration. To be appointed as an Associate Professor, a proven publication record is considered essential, and an active NRF rating would be an advantage. As the department aims to produce professional translators and interpreters, participation in professional organisations and associations of translation and interpreting is a further advantage.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate would be required to teach across all courses and modules as appropriate; supervise postgraduate students across a range of topics in the discipline of translation and/or interpreting; initiate and implement changes in the curriculum in line with developments in the field; engage in a mix of contact teaching and online learning; and promote research projects within the discipline and across the School. An important aspect of this position is maintaining the reputation of the department and actively encouraging the enrolment of students from other African countries. As this is a senior position, the successful candidate would assume the position of Head of Department and provide leadership and mentoring to more junior members of staff, be responsible for all aspects of academic teaching and administration and play an active role in the intellectual and public life of both the University and the profession.

To apply, submit a letter of motivation - clearly indicating which position you are applying for, detailed CV and the names and contact details of three referees (incl. e-mail addresses).
