Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor in African Literature

The Department of African Literature is seeking to make an appointment at the rank of Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor to start in 2018. The department offers an undergraduate major in the literatures of Africa and the black diaspora, as well as Honours, MA and PhD degrees. Since its founding 34 years ago, the department has established an international profile as one of the leading centres for postcolonial literary studies.

Requirements: Candidates should have experience in teaching the subject at university level, and with an established publication record in African literatures, Black and African intellectual traditions, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies. It is critical that candidates demonstrate an ability to teach two or more African regional literatures.

For appointment at the Associate Professor level, qualifications are a PhD, extensive experience in academic management, and a teaching, postgraduate supervision, research, and public profile commensurate with the rank. Applicants for Senior Lecturer must have a PhD and a highly developed record of teaching, postgraduate supervision and research.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be required to take on senior leadership roles in the department; offer a wide-ranging curriculum across all years of study; supervise postgraduate students; be research-active in areas related to the discipline; participate in interdisciplinary research and teaching; and take part in the intellectual and public life of the School and University.
