Pre-Doctoral Fellowship ⎻ Carter G. Woodson Institute at the University of Virginia

The Carter G. Woodson Institute's distinguished fellowship is a two-year residential fellowship for pre-doctoral students whose work focuses on Africa and/or the African Diaspora. Scholars selected for the fellowship will relocate to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia to join a cohort of interdisciplinary scholars.

Fellows receive funding for two years (beginning August 1, 2024, and ending July 31, 2026). This includes an annual stipend of $30,000, plus health insurance.

  • Project title

  • Abstract or short-description of project (should not exceed 50 words)

  • Project description (should not exceed 7 double-spaced pages or 1,750 words)

  • Writing Sample 2 (file naming protocol: LASTNAME_SAMPLE2)

  • Bibliography (should not exceed 4 double-spaced pages) 

  • The working bibliography must be attached under "Writing Sample 2" in the application form.

  • The bibliography need not be an “annotated bibliography.” It is intended to provide the review committee with a list of the authors with whom you engage in your dissertation project.

  • 3 Letters of Recommendation (signed originals only) by persons qualified to evaluate the proposals for which support is being sought. 

  • N.B.: The application does not require an additional academic writing sample (a paper or dissertation chapter). The review committee will assess the abstract and project description as an example of one's writing.

Applicants must request letters of recommendation through the application portal by providing each recommender’s name and email address. Recommenders will be notified automatically once the form is complete. This can occur prior to the submission of the full application.

Eligibility and Terms/Conditions

The Woodson Institute fellowship is open to qualified candidates without restriction as to citizenship or current residence.

The pre-doctoral fellows must be in residence at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia for the duration of the award period. Fellows are expected to participate in the series of workshops held during the academic year and to present their work periodically to the larger academic community.

Fellows may accept no employment, fellowships, or consulting obligations during the Woodson fellowship period without the approval of the Director.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check at time of offer per University Policy.

COVID Vaccination Requirement

The University of Virginia expects all current and new employees (UVA Health System and Academic), to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

If hired to work within the University Health System, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination or be willing to receive the vaccination. Employees may request a medical or religious exemption from vaccination.

If hired to work on the Academic side of the University, excluding the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, UPG, and the Health Systems Library, you will be required to provide proof.
